Another PDF in the downloads folder.
I used to show here how to create a lead magnet with ChatGPT in less than 30 minutes. Today, the speed is hardly surprising. You enter a topic, get text and turn it into a PDF. Your prospect gets plenty of those by now.
What actually stays open on their screen? What do they use when they're working on their task? That's what interests me. A neatly designed PDF nobody uses mainly gives us another file. It hasn't created a customer relationship yet.
So I'd start with a task the reader wants to complete today. The lead magnet should help them do it. By the end, they should have decided or done something that was still unresolved before. Then they have a reason to keep listening to you.
The role a lead magnet still plays today
A lead magnet gives a prospect their first glimpse of your work. You might help them assess their offer or spot a recurring mistake. After using it, they should be able to say what helped.
The best lead magnet solves the first useful part. Afterward, the reader knows more clearly whether they can continue alone or need support. That makes it easier for the right prospects to see why they want to keep working with you.
Six steps to a lead magnet with substance
Before asking AI to write, decide who you want to help and with which task. Production gets easier after that. You can judge every paragraph by whether it helps that particular person move forward.
1. Choose a specific situation
Not 'improve marketing,' but something like 'check an offer's promised result in 20 minutes.'
2. Define a small success
After using the lead magnet, the person should have decided, created or recognized something.
3. Feed in your own experience
Give AI examples, mistakes, cases, language and your point of view. A topic alone isn't enough.
4. Choose the right format
Match the format to the task: a checklist, calculator, mini-audit, template, video or interactive AI conversation.
5. Edit it yourself
Check truth, tone, practical usefulness and anything that sounds generic or inflated.
6. Connect the next step
Make clear who would benefit from working with you further and what would change for them.
A better brief for AI
Tell the AI who will use the lead magnet and where that person is stuck. Add an example from your work. Explain what the reader should be able to do afterward and which advice you wouldn't give yourself. Ask to see the structure first. You'll spot early whether the AI understood you.
Then check each section for one purpose: Does it help with a decision or action? If not, remove it. More pages don't automatically increase perceived value.
When an interactive AI conversation beats a PDF
A static lead magnet fits when the same information applies to everyone. When people arrive from different starting points, a short AI conversation can be more valuable: it asks questions, assesses answers and produces a personal first recommendation.
That lets the lead magnet demonstrate how your later product can work. The prospect experiences part of your expertise instead of just reading a promise about it. At the same time, you learn which situations and questions actually arise in your audience.
Be clear about data use and boundaries, and don't sell sensitive decisions as automated certainty.
A lead magnet needs a clear path to the next step
Show the lead magnet where you already talk about this customer question: below a relevant article, in a post or in an email. Explain what the reader can get done with it. Then give them a fitting next step, such as a deeper article or a look at your product.
Count more than sign-ups. Do people reply? Do they use the lead magnet? Does it lead to conversations about your offer? I'd rather hear from a few well-matched people it helped than celebrate a big download count and hear from nobody afterward.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about this article
Can ChatGPT create an entire lead magnet?
AI can make structuring, drafting and producing variants much faster. Your own experience, fact-checking, tone, design and the link to your offer still need deliberate human direction.
Which lead magnet format works best?
The format that most easily gives the customer their first small success. That could be a checklist, a template, a mini-audit, a video or an interactive AI conversation.
How long should a lead magnet be?
The reader should be able to complete the promised task with it. If one page is enough, make it one page. If they need a worked example, give them the example. More pages aren't more help.
